Description
A moulded, carved and gilded wooden fireplace screen; the upright columns feature a decoration of water leaves, trelliswork with floral motifs, fluting and cut-out leaves, whilst the crossbars are decorated with intertwined myrtle branches. The removable embroidered silk panel depicting a vase of flowers is topped by a laurel wreath flanked by scrollwork (signs of wear; the four disc-shaped glides are missing). Attributed to Georges JACOB or JACOB Frères. The frame is of Louis XVI period. The leaf, its frame and its crown are of Restoration period. Height: 120 cm – Width: 41 cm – Depth: 73 cm Note: Our fireplace screen is comparable, with the exception of the crowning element above the central panel, to the fireplace screen made by Jacob Frères, now in the Château de Fontainebleau (inv. GMT1440). The screen housed at Fontainebleau formed part of the furnishings of the second drawing room of Jean-Baptiste Treilhard (1742–1810) at the Palace of the Executive Directory, now the Palais du Luxembourg. Jean-Baptiste Treilhard (1742–1810) was a member of the Executive Directory from 26 Floréal, Year VI (15 May 1798) to 28 Prairial, Year VII (16 June 1799). His furniture comprised a three-backed sofa, two bergère chairs and ten armchairs, accompanied by a fireplace screen and a folding screen, both of the Louis XVI period. Bibliography: -J.-P.
