Description
Two double-bladed folding travel knives known as ‘à la Berge’, with handles made of tortoiseshell inlays set with rosette-shaped rivets in gold or silver: one with a silver and steel blade engraved ‘C. DUROY’, a cutler based in Langres who was active from the 18th century onwards; the other with a steel and vermeil blade engraved with ‘may my wound be fatal’ (damaged blade, later inscription). Paris, c. 1781–1789 and late 18th or early 19th century. Length (blades extended): 33 cm – Gross weight in silver: 50.20 g Length (blades extended): 31 cm – Gross weight in gold: 43.50 g Note: These travelling knives were fitted with two blades, one made of steel and the other of precious metal for cutting fruit.
