FLANDERS, Brussels or Oudenaarde. Diane discovering the sleeping Endymion. Tapestry woven in wool and silk (historical restorations, signs of wear, reduced in height and width). Original border. Second half of the 16th century. Height: 187 cm – Width: 248 cm This interesting tapestry features the figures of Diana and Endymion at its centre. The huntress goddess, adorned with her attributes, approaches her lover gently as he sleeps upon his bow and quiver. In the foreground, two hares depicted in their warren symbolise the bond that unites them: the position adopted by the one on the left is reminiscent of Diana’s slender posture, her hand outstretched towards her beloved. In the background, the stag reminds the viewer of the shared pursuit of the two figures. They are surrounded by a setting of vegetation.
