Description
KAZAK BORCHALOU. A rare, large and highly original wool velvet carpet on a wool backing, decorated with three bronze-green and garnet-coloured medallions framed by a fine golden-yellow border featuring rows of polychrome floral buttons in the shape of stylised diamonds. Triple borders, the main one (typical of Kazak Borchalou) featuring motifs of stylised ivory centipedes with serpentine-shaped bodies, S (snakes), stylised coloured stones and stylised combs (symbol of the weaver) surrounded by stylised insect shells and crabs. Caucasus, late 19th century. Length: 223 cm – Width: 147 cm Provenance: Private collection assembled by Mr F., a French industrialist who was based in several countries in the South Caucasus and Russia both before and after the collapse of the former Soviet Union.
