KAZAK PINWHEEL. Important, A rare and exceptional wool velvet carpet on a wool backing, featuring an original pinwheel design formed by ten medallions inlaid with stylised tarantulas and crabs, framed by two slender bands of stylised crab claws with symmetrical hook-shaped ends, and surrounded by two stylised candlesticks in the shape of imaginary figures on a brick-red field. Triple borders, the main one being ivory in colour with motifs of rows of hooks, coloured stones and multicoloured geometric floral buds. Southern Caucasus, Azerbaijan, circa 1870. Length: 254 cm – Width: 161 cm Provenance: Private collection assembled by Mr F., a French industrialist who was based in several countries in the South Caucasus and Russia both before and after the collapse of the former Soviet Union.
