KAZAK BORCHALOU. A rare, exceptional and original wool velvet carpet on a wool base, featuring motifs of coloured stones, star-shaped flowers and stylised hourglasses on a navy blue field, adorned with five cube-shaped medallions inlaid with stylised tarantulas. Three borders, the main one being very wide and decorated with centipede-like motifs in the form of crenellated ivory caterpillars, surrounded by medallions inlaid with animals, star-shaped flowers, hooks and small, multicoloured stylised hourglasses. Caucasus, late 19th century. Length: 180 cm – Width: 125 cm Provenance: Private collection assembled by Mr F., a French industrialist who was based in several countries in the South Caucasus and Russia both before and after the collapse of the former Soviet Union.
