Giuseppe Bernardino BISON (1762–1844). A pair: view of Venice with the Rialto Bridge, view of the Quai des Esclaves. Gouaches (slightly wavy). Height: 15.9 cm – Width: 28.3 cm; Height: 16.6 cm – Width: 28.3 cm Note: Giuseppe Bernardino Bison began his apprenticeship in Girolamo Romani’s studio in Brescia before moving to Venice in 1777. He then honed his technique in the studios of Antonio Maria Zanetti and Antonio Mauro. He remained in Venice until 1800, drawing inspiration from the great 18th-century Venetian masters, Tiepolo and Guardi. He then left for Trieste and ended his career in Milan, alternating between theatre set designs and vedute of his beloved Venice. Our two superb gouaches perfectly reflect this art of the veduta, which Bison internalised and elevated, making his gouaches so unique: they are invitations to travel and to stroll along the canals of Venice, which have inspired generations of collectors to dream.
