Description
Greenery with birds. Flemish tapestry, probably from Oudenaarde. Late 16th–early 17th century. Woven in wool and silk (warp in wool, weft in wool and silk). Height: 205 cm; Width: 285 cm. This majestic tapestry is part of the tradition of late 16th-century ‘verdures’ featuring large leaves. Produced in several centres, including Enghien, Oudenaarde and Brussels, their popularity was such that it is difficult to determine their provenance in the absence of a border or marks. The gigantic serrated leaves that once dominated the compositions have given way to lush flora, comprising layers of various plant species with supple, rounded foliage that contributes to the overall harmony of the scene. The vegetation is set against an elegant fountain, an enclosed garden and a wooden bridge, suggesting a human presence that is absent from the composition. The landscape is adorned with four birds, including a peacock sitting majestically, which seem to blend into the plant life through their shape and colouring. In the background, the mountains and the river, rendered in subtle, almost faded hues, reflect the artist’s pursuit of an atmospheric perspective. The scene is framed by monumental architecture, evoking a palace or a fortress. This charming fragment has retained its beautiful colours. It is in a fine state of preservation, with some wear to the silk fibres. It is reduced in height and width. Bibliography: DELMARCEL, Guy, *La tapisserie flamande*, 1999, pp. 168–194.
