Karabakh carpet (warp, weft and pile in wool), Southern Caucasus.
Late 19th century.

Length: 278 cm; Width: 200 cm.
The dark brown ground is embellished with geometric floral motifs and floral scrolls. A tobacco-coloured border featuring leaf scrolls is framed by two counter-borders.
Karabakh means ‘black garden’ and refers to a region stretching across the southern part of Azerbaijan. It became an important centre for weaving, with the establishment of numerous workshops as early as the 17th century, driven by Muslim and Christian artisans.
