A celebrated animal painter, Rosa Bonheur also distinguished herself through her sculptures, which she produced right up until the 1850s. Trained by her father and Léon Cogniet, she was particularly fond of the domestic animals she observed at fairs. The vast majority of her sculptures were cast in bronze by the foundryman Hippolyte Peyrol (1856–1929), the husband of Juliette Bonheur, the artist’s younger sister.
