Description
Auguste CAIN (1821–1894) African Donkey Bronze with a brown patina. Signed ‘CAIN’ on the base. Bears the initials ‘AC’ on the donkey’s left thigh. Titled ‘AFRICAN DONKEY’ on the plinth. Height: 15 cm; Length: 12.8 cm A pupil of Alexandre Guionnet and later of François Rude, Auguste Caïn specialised in animal sculpture. The Jardin des Plantes became his place of learning and observation, enabling him to create sculptures which he began exhibiting from 1846. In partnership with Pierre-Jules Mêne, whose daughter he married in 1842, he collaborated with him on the production of numerous bronze animal sculptures. Through his association with his father-in-law, he developed a distinct talent that earned him numerous public commissions and a prominent reputation amongst 19th-century animal sculptors.
