Description
Alexandre de LUTTON (Montargis 1789–1864) Portrait of Jean-Baptiste-Hugues Nelson-Cottreau in the black musketeer’s uniform of Louis XVIII Canvas Monogrammed ‘AL’ in the bottom left-hand corner Inscribed on the reverse (probably a transcription of the signature that was on the reverse of the original canvas): painted by Alexandre Lutton in 1817. Height: 216 cm; Width: 141 cm Born in Montargis on 4 July 1789, Alexandre de Lutton himself served in the King’s Guard at the start of the Restoration, during which time he presumably met his subject. A member of the King’s Bodyguard from 1813 to 1816, he was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1814. After being wounded by a bullet in his right foot, he appears to have turned his attention to an artistic career. His presence is recorded in Metz in 1821 as director of the School of Painting (1). There he published a ‘Journal de Peinture’ and left the city after the second issue. However, his biography remains poorly documented. This full-length portrait depicts Jean-Baptiste-Hugues Nelson-Cottreau (1786–1851), a member of a family of industrialists, sugar refiners and art collectors. In 1811, he authored a collection of verses entitled “Le Bal de Brévannes” in the emerging troubadour style, and later wrote an essay dedicated to the painter Charles Kuwasseg (2). Lutton depicts him wearing the uniform of the bodyguards in the 2nd Company of Musketeers during the reign of Louis XVIII. A member of the Guard of Honour in 1813 and 1814, and an officer in the King’s Musketeers in 1814 and 1815, a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1814, he retired in 1816 with the rank of lieutenant in the cavalry.
