(Signs of wear and previous restorations.)
Length: 534 cm; Width: 434 cm.
This carpet is adorned with a large multi-lobed medallion featuring a red octagon, set against a red ground and enhanced by an elegant, stylised polychrome floral design. A wide navy blue border featuring a succession of small polychrome medallions is framed by two counter-borders.
Amritsar is another major weaving centre in the Punjab; it was founded in 1579 by a Sikh guru, Ram Das, and is regarded as a holy city by Sikhs. The first factories, opened in 1860, employed weavers from Kashmir, where they had settled to weave their magnificent traditional shawls. Later, at the instigation of British trading houses, further factories were established in the Amritsar area.
