SENNEH RUG, North-West Iran Late 19th century. Dimensions: 190 x 135 cm. Wool pile on a cotton backing. Density of approximately 9,000 to 10,000 knots per square decimetre. Ivory field inlaid with stylised botehs (seed motif, a symbol of genesis and fertility found in cashmere shawls). Main border in brick orange inlaid with floral bulbs. Beautiful polychromy. Remarkable finesse. Natural oxidation and wear.
