Description
30. D'après Valentin de Boulogne, XVIIe siècle Scène de taverne oil on panel 26.5 x 35cm (10 7/16 x 13 3/4in). Provenance The Collection of Jacques Seligmann, Paris and thence by descent Private collection, France The present painting is a later copy after a lost original by Valentin de Boulogne (1591-1632), one of the foremost French Caravaggesque painters, likely dating to circa 1622 during his Roman period. Several versions of the composition are known, including the large canvas in the Musée des Beaux-Arts et d'Archéologie, Besançon (inv. 842.3.1 ; 842.2.1), and others in Tours and Munich. Smaller and additional variants have appeared in past collections and archives. The original composition was engraved by Jean Ganière (c. 1615–1666), in 1640 and later by other printmakers, likely serving as the source for the present work.
