The present painting relates closely to the lower‑right detail of The Playful Four, sold at Dorotheum on 2 May 2023 (lot 645), and shows a striking resemblance in both composition and handling. Charles van den Eycken was born in Brussels in 1859 and was trained first by his painter father before studying under the realist animal specialist Joseph Stevens at the Académie des Beaux‑Arts. He became one of Belgium's leading painters of domestic animals, known for his charming portrayals of cats and dogs in lively interior settings. From 1881 onward he exhibited widely across Belgium and Europe, earning several distinctions and even painting works for Queen Marie‑Henriette.
