Description
91. Tankard with pewter lid, Westerwald, late 17th/early 18th century
Decorated with a central band of scrolling flowers in red and blue, the shapes incised into the body, with surrounding bands of alternating blue and red rings, the pewter cover with the dual portraits of Emperor Charles VI and his wife Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, 24cm high,
The presence of the marital iconography on the pewter lid, featuring oval portrait medallions of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI (1685-1740) and his consort Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (1691-1750), being brought together by a putto surrounded by flaming torches, suggests this may have been made to commemorate their union in 1708.
