Description
97. A Dutch Delft plate, circa 1720-40 Painted with a scene after Leonaert Bramer (1596-1674) in petit feu enamels showing a baker transferring loaves of bread from his work table into a brick oven while his assistant tramples ingredients in a trough table to the right, within a border consisting of alternating red and green scrolling flowers against an iron-red dashed band, heightened in gilding, 22cm diam., fret mark in blue (visible wear and small rim chips) Provenance Sold at Mak van Waay, Amsterdam, October 15, 1963, lot 71; Aronson Antiquairs, Amsterdam, 1994; A Manhattan private collection Literature Aronson Antiquairs, In The Eye of the Beholder: Perspectives on Dutch Delftware, 2011, p. 100, no. 58 The scene on this plate is taken from the drawing "Baker" by Leonaert Bramer (1596-1674), from the "Street Works" ("Straatwerken") series produced around 1650. This series, comprising 66 drawings, depicted contemporary tradesmen and artisans marked as a departure from Bramer's typical oeuvre depicting Old and New Testament scenes, as well as scenes from Antiquity. Only about 15 of Bramer's drawings were translated into Delftware, of which this plate is a rare example.
