Description
126. A French façon de Venise pharmacy vase or pill jar, early 18th century
The tulip-shaped bowl with a lipped rim, set on a short hollow baluster stem, over a folded conical foot, 12.7cm high
Provenance
With Frides Laméris, Amsterdam, 2019
Pharmacy glasses of this type are typical of Spain and Southern France, and were probably intended for pills. The lipped rim would have served a functional purpose, enabling a cover to be secured with string. For a similar example, see Jacqueline Bellanger, Verre d'Usage et de Prestige: France, 1500-1800, 1988.
