Russian Orthodox travelling icon – Mother of God of the Passion. Presumably from Russia, circa 1900 Russian Orthodox travelling icon – Mother of God of the Passion. Presumably from Russia, circa 1900. A standing devotional icon in an architecturally shaped, gilded metal frame, surmounted by a cross and decorated with blue, light blue and dark enamel in stylised tendril and spiral motifs. Set on a widened, similarly enamelled base. The polychrome miniature depicts the Mother of God with the Christ Child, flanked by the archangels Michael and Gabriel. The angels carry the instruments of Christ’s future suffering: the cross, the lance and the sponge on a stick. The Child turns towards the angels in alarm and seeks protection from his mother. A loose sandal alludes to his sudden movement and emphasises his human vulnerability. The polychrome miniature depicts the Mother of God with the Christ Child, flanked by the archangels Michael and Gabriel.
