Description
A standing Buddha from Laos. 18th/19th century. A standing Buddha from Laos. 18th/19th century. The Buddha stands upright with his hands crossed in front of his body, combined with a tall, slender build and a robe flaring out on either side. This pose is known in Laotian Buddhist art as ‘Contemplating the Bodhi Tree’. The crossed wrists in front of the body are described as a characteristic feature of Laotian iconography. Furthermore, the British Museum holds an 18th-century Laotian bronze standing Buddha with the hands held horizontally in front of the abdomen and describes this posture as quite exceptional. The tall, pointed ushnisha, long earlobes, slender form and the silhouette of the robe also fit well within the Lao/Lan Xang tradition. H. 23 cm. -
