A finely cast bronze figure of the Green Tara (Syamatara), Beijing, Pala revival style, 18th C. A finely cast bronze figure of the Green Tara (Syamatara), Beijing, Pala revival style, 18th century. The goddess is elegantly depicted in lalitasana, the posture of royal relaxation, seated on a high double lotus throne. Her right leg is extended downwards and rests on a separate lotus flower, whilst her left leg is bent and rests on the throne. The right hand is held downwards in varada mudra, the gesture of wish-fulfilment and generosity, whilst the left hand is raised before the chest in a teaching gesture. On either side, long, gracefully curved lotus stems emerge, ending in flowers at shoulder height. Tara is richly adorned with an intricately crafted crown, large round earrings, necklaces, arm and wrist bands, and a finely decorated belt. Her upper body is bare, and her slender, slightly curved figure is emphasised by the close-fitting dhoti. Her carefully modelled facial features, with downcast eyes and a serene expression, are framed by a richly ornamented headdress. The reverse is also fully detailed. Executed in bronze with a glossy dark brown patina and, in places, a lighter patina resulting from wear. The design deliberately draws on the sculptural tradition of the Pala Empire and fits within the renewed interest in this style at the Qing court and in Beijing.
