Description
French School, 19th century. Bust of a veiled woman, possibly Mary Magdalene.
French School, 19th century. Bust of a veiled woman, possibly Mary Magdalene. A fine historicist bust of a young veiled woman, possibly depicting Mary Magdalene, shown with downcast eyes and a serene, contemplative expression. The head is framed by a richly pleated veil with a finely ornamented border. The clothing features a pleated bodice and a broadly draped cloak. The bust rests on an integrally moulded architectural plinth, decorated with moulded friezes, a beaded border and ornamentation in a historicist style. Crafted from brown-patinated, hollow-cast metal, it is monogrammed ‘A.F.’ on the front of the base. This monogram appears on other French sculptures from the late 19th century. 34 x 21 cm.
