Description
GEORGES CHARLES COUDRAY (1862–1944), Bakie – Allégorie de la Nubie, France, late 19th / early 20th
GEORGES CHARLES COUDRAY (1862–1944), Bakie – Allégorie de la Nubie, France, late 19th / early 20th century An imposing Orientalist bronze bust with varied brown and dark brown patina, depicting a young woman as an allegorical representation of Nubia. Her head is raised slightly and turned to one side; her hair is pinned up high and secured with several long hairpins. Around her forehead she wears a wide, dark-patinated diadem, featuring a central relief medallion with Egyptian-style motifs. A pleated drapery falls over her left shoulder, contrasting with the warmer patina of the face, neck and bare upper body. Set on an architecturally designed, stepped plinth, inscribed ‘BAKIE’ on the front. Signed ‘G. Coudray’ in the bronze. The sculpture belongs to Coudray’s characteristic Orientalist oeuvre, in which he primarily depicted female figures with Egyptian and classical motifs. Coudray studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1883 onwards. 62 x 32 cm.
