GEORGES VAN DER STRAETEN (1856–1941), La Comédie, A large bronze bust of a young woman, France, circa 1890–1900 A beautifully cast bronze bust with a brown patina, depicting a smiling young woman from the Belle Époque. She is depicted with her head turned slightly to one side, her hair partly wrapped in a scarf and dressed in an exuberantly pleated gown with a wide, strongly modelled collar. At the base, the composition is enriched with a theatre mask and a rose, alluding to the world of theatre and comedy. The lively face, the elegant posture and the fluid rendering of the hair and fabric are characteristic of Van der Straeten’s oeuvre and of Parisian sculpture around 1900. Signed ‘G. van der Straeten’ on the reverse and bearing a circular foundry mark. Brown-patinated bronze. France, Belle Époque / Art Nouveau, circa 1890–1900. Georges Van der Straeten, born in Ghent in 1856, settled in Paris in 1883, where he established himself as a successful sculptor of elegant female figures and character pieces. Stylistically, his oeuvre lies at the intersection of the late 19th-century academic tradition and Art Nouveau. He exhibited in Paris for many years and was awarded a silver medal at the 1900 World’s Fair. The Musée d’Orsay gives his dates of life as 1856–1941. 40 x 24 cm. -
