Description
FRENCH SCHOOL, CIRCA 1900, A beautifully patinated bronze bust of a young woman.
FRENCH SCHOOL, CIRCA 1900, A beautifully patinated bronze bust of a young woman in a historical costume A finely modelled bronze bust of a young woman, depicted in half-length and dressed in a richly detailed, historical gown. The youthful face, with large, forward-looking eyes and a closed mouth, is framed by short, wavy hair, partly covered by a hood or headscarf. The costume is richly detailed with pleated and ornamented sleeves, wide bands across the bodice and a central relief decoration. A round medallion hangs at the front. The strongly modelled folds and ornaments form a striking contrast with the smoother rendered skin areas of the face and neck. Cast in bronze with a warm, nuanced red to dark brown patina, with lighter patina from wear in places. Bears an incised signature in the bronze, which is partly difficult to read. France, late 19th / early 20th century, circa 1890–1910. 38,5 x 34 cm.
