EUGÈNE MARIOTON (1857–1933) Mater Dolorosa, France, late 19th century A beautifully cast bronze. EUGÈNE MARIOTON (1857–1933) Mater Dolorosa, France, late 19th century A beautifully cast bronze bust with a warm brown patina, depicting the Virgin Mary as Mater Dolorosa, the Sorrowful Mother. Mary is depicted with her head raised slightly and a subdued, melancholic expression, her eyes turned slightly upwards and her lips closed. Her head and shoulders are enveloped by a heavily draped veil, the flowing folds of which frame her face and leave a few wavy locks of hair visible on either side. The austere, monumental treatment of the robe forms a stark contrast to the finely modelled facial features and reinforces the contemplative nature of the depiction. Set on a solidly cast, stepped rectangular plinth. Signed ‘E. Marioton’ in the bronze and bearing the stamped model/cast number ‘7283’ on the reverse. France, circa 1890–1900. 24 x 14 cm, -
