JAN VAN CEULEN DE JONGE (1677–1750), THE HAGUE An important standing clock from The Hague in burl w JAN VAN CEULEN DE JONGE (1677–1750), THE HAGUE An important standing clock from The Hague in burl walnut, circa 1720–1730. The case, with its particularly slender proportions, is crafted from walnut and beautifully grained burl walnut; the tall door features an oval viewing window and is flanked by moulded stiles. The cap features twisted columns and richly openwork-cut vine friezes, crowned by three gilded spherical ornaments. The square brass dial features richly embossed and gilded corner ornaments, with a silver-plated numeral ring bearing Roman hour markers and Arabic minute divisions. It has finely crafted central hands, a separate seconds hand beneath XII, a date window above VI and a moon phase indicator. Signed ‘J. van Ceule’, The Hague. The eight-day weight-driven movement with striking mechanism on a bell. The movement is in good working order and runs very well. The Hague, circa 1720–1730. Provenance: purchased from Hans Kreft at PAN Amsterdam. Jan van Ceulen the Younger is also well represented in museums: the Rijksmuseum owns a richly decorated table clock by him from circa 1700–1725, whilst the Historical Museum of The Hague lists a standing watch by J. van Ceule le Jeune as one of the key pieces in its clock collection.
