Description
Living Christ in copper with champlevé enamel. Limoges, France. 13th century.
Neither of the hands is preserved, and the left arm shows a loss. Small defects on the crown.
21.5 × 16.5 cm.
Our piece closely resembles the Christ from a processional cross reproduced in De Limoges a Silos, the catalogue of the exhibition of the same name, on page 167 [CAT. 44], “one of the three processional crosses with champlevé enamels preserved in the provincial museum of León.” As the catalogue states, the Christ we relate to ours is “affected by a slight anatomical sinuosity, triumphant over death, with open eyes defined by two drops of lapis-blue enamel, and above the engraved head a mural crown with three battlements. The body attains a three-dimensional projection thanks to the repoussé work with a chisel on a copper sheet, to which, once given volume, linear incisions were applied to define the facial features, hair and beard, ribcage, and the musculature of the torso, arms, and epigastrium.”
