Castilian school. Protogothic. Late 13th century. 'Seat of Wisdom. Sedes Sapientiae' Figure in sculpted and polychrome stone. 73 x 30 x 26 cm. Our beautiful and special image perfectly shows us the transition from Romanesque to Gothic. The process through which the cult of Mary will cease to represent her with the rigidity of the full Romanesque forms and will turn her into a loving mother, her role as a severe throne of wisdom now forgotten.  In this case, we are at the beginning of a more naturalistic Gothic style. Mary still retains her throne, on which she is Queen, and her posture is frontal and hieratic, yet she holds her son, the Baby Jesus, with both hands, who is shown slightly turned towards his mother, gracefully holding her cloak. However, their gazes do not yet connect with each other.  The expression of both is, in our view, somewhat sweeter, and in an attempt to soften their gaze, the sculptor captures a certain impression of wonder in both characters. Finally, Mary and Jesus sketch a timid smile.    Provenance: - Private collection. Mallorca.
