Description
'Scene of the Crucifixion'. Magnificent carved and polychromed wooden relief with gilt residue. Antwerp, Southern Netherlands. Gothic. Circa 1495-1505. 69 x 42 x 14 cm. The relief would have been part of an altar dedicated to the Calvary of Christ. In the lower part of the scene, we can contemplate Saint John gathering the Virgin Mary in his arms, while he looks towards the place where the cross is placed. At his side we see a woman saint in prayer. In the upper part of the sculptural group are four characters on horseback, among these would be Longinus, the centurion who pierced Christ with a lance, the soldiers’ chief and perhaps Stephaton. These Flemish sculptural sets were made up of diverse independent reliefs, joined in a set. This one would have been situated towards the left, as we can see from the way the characters are set out. They narrated the episodes in a vertical format. This relief can be linked to the fragment of 'three soldiers' which was made in oak and dated in Brussels, Southern Netherlands, circa 1500 which is kept in the collection at the Metropolitan Museum, being donated by J. Pierpont Morgan in 1916 with the inventory number: 16.32.219. It can also be linked to the fragment dedicated to Jesus on the way to Calvary made in Brussels, and dated circa 1510, which is kept in the same museum. (Inventory no.: 15.12) It can also be linked to the relief 'Saints and Soldiers of the Crucifixion' which formed part of the exhibition 'El esplendor de Flandes. Arte de Bruselas, Amberes y Malinas en los siglos XV-XVI' (The splendour of Flanders: The Art of Brussels, Antwerp and Mechelen in the 15th-16th century) organised by the Fundació La Caixa from April 1999 to January 2000.
