Description
Large alms dish in gilded and embossed brass. Nuremberg. Germany. Circa 1500.
Diameter: 38 cm.
Throughout the 15th and 16th centuries, the fashion for these embossed decorative plates spread throughout Europe. They were manufactured in Germany, especially in Nuremberg, where the most beautiful ones were produced, in Central Europe, and in northern Italy. These plates were not reserved exclusively for worship but could also be used as light reflectors or decorative elements.
This beautiful offering plate corresponds perfectly to the productions of the Nuremberg workshops.
It features a central dome, called the navel, and is decorated with embossed designs specific to these workshops. Made according to a traditional pattern, its navel is adorned with vegetal symbol, its base with beautiful German Gothic letters, interspersed with four medallions featuring profiles of characters, and its rim with engraved decorations. Finally, for reasons of strength, the rim is bent over a wire, as was customary in Germany.
