'True Portrait of Jesus of Medinaceli'

Jesus or Christ of Medinaceli, also known as the Lord of Madrid, who appears portrayed in our copper painting, is an image found in the Basilica of Our Father Jesus of Medinaceli in Madrid. As stated on the Basilica’s website, “notable in its iconography is the scapular displayed on his chest, with the blue and red Trinitarian cross, a distinguishing mark that firmly links the image to the order that redeemed it from the Moors.” This distinguishing mark is clearly also present in our portrayed Christ. “Everything seems to indicate that the artist sought to reproduce the scene of the Passion in which the governor Pilate, after questioning Jesus privately, brings him out of the praetorium and presents him to the people who were shouting against him, saying ‘Behold the Man,’ or, more accurately: ‘Here is your King’.”
Regarding the authorship of the sculpture, they state the following: “Undoubtedly, the image of Jesus is a Sevillian work that could be dated to the second or third decade of the seventeenth century. Some of its expressive features recall those used by Francisco de Ocampo in several of his identified works, yet its artistic formulas are similar to those employed by the sculptor Luis de la Peña in his images of the Sorrowful Jesus, venerated in various churches of Morón de la Frontera (Seville), and which date from that same period.”
