Huamanga stone is a type of white alabaster with delicate translucency, and works made from it take their name from their place of origin, Huamanga, located today in the Ayacucho region.
The Province of Huamanga is one of the eleven that make up the department of Ayacucho, Peru. It is famous for its quarry of white stone, known as “Huamanga stone,” which has been used since antiquity and especially during the 17th and 18th centuries to produce sculptures of great quality.
During the 18th century, the sculpture workshops of Huamanga reached their peak, particularly within the context of viceregal art. Sculptors of the time, influenced by the Baroque style, created works that reflect both indigenous tradition and the European elements introduced by artists from Navarre and Aragon. Many of these sculptures were used in churches and convents, adorning altars and chapels.
