Description
PATEK PHILIPPE Patek Philippe, "Fifty One Fifty Nine", Grand Complications Collection, Ref. 5159G-001, movement no. 5791569, case no. 4674275, sold in 2014 An extremely fine and rare, full-set, water-resistant, large, 18K white gold, round Officer-style, half-hunting case, automatic, perpetual calendar wristwatch with opalin silvered dial, painted radial black Roman numerals, retrograde date, moon phases, leap year indication, sweep center seconds, leather strap and an 18K white gold deployant clasp. Fitted with a Cal. 324 S QR (Quantième Retrograde), rhodium-plated, 30 jewels, Gyromax balance, stamped with the Seal of Geneva, gold rotor, hinged gold dust cover, sapphire-set snap on case back, sapphire crystals. Dial, case and movement signed. Diam. 38 mm. Thickness 12 mm. Accompanied by a fitted tube-shaped presentation box with winding facilities, outer box, Certificate of Origin, white gold setting pin, Patek Philippe register booklet, Patek Philippe full moon and leap year calendar booklet, user manual. The new reference 5159 is slightly larger (38 mm.) than Ref. 5059 (36 mm.) and has a hand guilloche dial. In 2016, the model was available in 18K white gold with a white opaline dial, under the Ref. 5159G-001 (like the present watch); in 18K yellow gold, under the Ref. 5159J-001; and in 18K pink gold, under the Ref. 5159R-001. Both references pay tribute to the early Officier-style wristwatches. Officier cases are fitted with straight curved lugs, gold screwed bars to attach the bracelet and a plain hinged dust cover over a snap-on (plain or transparent) case back, to protect the movement. This type of construction is also called half-hunting case. Both references are equipped with an intriguing complication: a retrograde date display combined with a perpetual calendar. The date is indicated by a hand progressing along a 240° arc located within the hour scale between 8 and 4 o’clock. Around midnight on the last day of each month, whether it is the 28th, 29th, 30th, or 31st, the hand automatically jumps back to the 1st.
