CHINA, Yongle mark and period, dated 1418 A very rare ivory seal with a carved yellow patina, the square matrix bearing the four-character "Chongxiu fajiao" mark. The handle is in the form of a Buddhist wheel known as the "Dharma Wheel", circular in shape with a lotus flower in the centre, resting on a double lotiform base. The upper part of the matrix bears the inscriptions "Ci Lama Zheba suonan jiancan" (𧶽刺麻着巴镆南監參, "The Zheba Lama Sonam Jianzhan") and the other with the mark "Yongle shiliunian zhengyue ri" (永樂十六年正月日, "First month of the sixteenth year of the reign of Emperor Yongle corresponding to the year 1418").
