JAPAN, Edo period, 17th/18th century
Sujibachi kabuto type helmet composed of sixty-two riveted wrought iron slats, decorated with iron and gilded copper fittings (tehen no kanamono) in bas-relief. The visor (mabezashi) is edged in copper alloy and has some traces of red lacquer on the inside. The unusually flat lower edge (koshimaki) of the helmet shell has surprisingly few holes for the missing neck protector (shikoro).
