INDIA - Probably Delhi school, 2nd half of the 19th century Court Lady with Terrace Gouache enhanced with gold, on paper 22 x 30 cm (view). (Chips in the pigments.). On a terrace overlooking a vast nightscape, a pale-skinned female figure, her black hair undone, sits abandoned on a carpet. Two musicians accompany her on the vina and tabla; two maids in elegant court dress bring her offerings. A small dog lies at her feet. Provenance: private collection of a diplomat who served in India in the 1970s.
