Hossein Qollar-Aqasi (1902-1966) (Tehran, 1902-1966) was one of the founding masters of café painting (naqqāshi-ye qahveh-khāneh), a popular Iranian movement of the XXᵉ century drawing its subjects from the national epics of the Shāhnāmeh and Shiite religious traditions. Trained in the studio of his father, a designer of earthenware decorations, he took this narrative style from the wall to the canvas.
