Description
A beautiful ICON OF SAINT NICHOLAS THE MIRACLE-WORKER, painted in oil on red fabric; the saint is depicted in the centre, within a mandorla, giving his blessing and holding the Scriptures, the outer decoration, in gold accented with red, features a scroll of flowering branches tied with ribbons. It is preserved under glass in a stained wooden frame. Russian work from the early 20th century. Overall dimensions: 64x64 cm. (Some areas of the paint layer are missing). Provenance: according to oral tradition, this icon is in fact a fragment of a banner presented by Empress Maria Feodorovna (1847–1928) to her chief lady-in-waiting, Baroness Oxholm.
