Robert PANSART (Beauvais, 1909–1973, Beauvais), attributed to. The Judgement of Paris. Decorative ensemble comprising 40 panels. Eglomised glass with silver and gold oxidation, mirror, under-glass painting. Unsigned. Dimensions (approx.) 272 x 460 cm. (A few chips and losses along the edges, including two more significant ones, particularly at the corners; wear and losses to the silvering and on the backgrounds; in good overall condition) Robert Pansart was, alongside Max Ingrand and Pierre Lardin, one of the great French glass artists of the 1940s and 1950s. He collaborated with the interior designers Jean Pascaud, Jules Leleu and Marc du Plantier, as well as with master metalworkers such as Raymond Subes, Gilbert Poillerat and René Drouet. He is known for his contribution to the engraved glass decorations on the ocean liner *France*. With this major decorative ensemble, Pansart chose to use modern techniques to depict a key theme of Greco-Roman culture: the Judgement of Paris, which sparked the Trojan War. In this piece, we see Paris amongst his herd of goats, approaching a trio of women dressed in ancient style: the goddesses Aphrodite, Athena and Hera. Before them, another woman, Nemesis, holds out the Apple of Discord, which is to be awarded to the fairest among them. This scene complements ‘The Abduction of Helen’. Both scenes were most likely commissioned for a private mansion, as the size of the smaller of the two scenes appears to have been adapted to fit the constraints of the wall it adorned.
