Description
Charles CRESSENT (1685-1768), in the style of. A large flat desk in exotic wood veneer and light wood fillets on an oak frame, decorated with chased and gilded bronzes. It stands on four cambered clawed legs adorned with espagnolettes at the corners, the sides centred with a Bacchus mask, its hair covered with vine leaves, the curved belt opening into three drawers underlined by bronze mouldings, the side drawers with movable handles, the central drawer flanked by beautiful scrolling acanthus leaves is adorned with a large medallion keyhole with a fishnet background dotted with flowers. The ormolu top, carved with acanthus leaves, is upholstered in gilded leather with a small iron motif. The front of the cabinet on the visitor's side has three fake drawers. Height 81 cm. Length 184 cm. Depth 105 cm. Regency style, probably from the Faubourg Saint Antoine workshops in Paris. Some stains to the leather trim. Wear to the gilding, particularly to the moulding on the top. A few small cracks in the veneer to the right of the central drawer and to the right of the right side drawer. Provenance: private collection from Charente.
