Art nouveau
Carved and stained walnut wood bed.
The headboard takes the form of a peacock doing a cartwheel, its eyes adorned with alternating blue and green tinted glass cabochons.
The footboard is carved with two peacocks standing back to back on spheres.
Height: 167 cm, Length: 204 cm, Width: 128 cm.
Provenance Christie's Paris sale 31 January 2007 lot 330, according to the latter :
"According to oral tradition, this bed came from the "One Two Two", a famous Parisian brothel at the turn of the century.
This type of high-class establishment, known as a "maison de grande tolérance", was mainly to be found in Paris. One Two Two, located at 122 rue de Provence, was one of them. The establishment had a wide range of rooms, each with its own special decor, designed to titillate the man who sat on the bed."
