Description
Jean Siméon Chardin (1699–1779) (after) The Blower. 1744. Engraved by Lépicié. 38 x 26 cm The original painting was featured in the Louvre’s 1737 exhibition of paintings, under the title *A Chemist in his Laboratory*. It was painted for one of Chardin’s very first patrons, Conrad-Alexandre de Rothenbourg (1683 or 1684–1735). It is now in the Louvre Museum. The model is the painter Joseph Aved (1702–1766), a friend of Chardin’s and, like him, a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. Diderot wrote of this painting on 15 September 1753: ‘Mr Chardin exhibited, amongst several very mediocre paintings, one of a chemist engrossed in his reading. This painting struck me as very beautiful and worthy of Rembrandt, although it was scarcely mentioned.” The engraving was announced in the *Mercure de France* in January 1745 and described “a glassblower in his laboratory reading a book on alchemy intently”. ‘In depicting Aved, Chardin undoubtedly wished to pay tribute to a friend, but also to the man from whom he had received his first lessons in figure drawing.’ (Pierre Rosenberg, *Chardin 1699–1779*, exhibition catalogue, Paris, Grand Palais, RMN, 1979, p. 212). Included is an 18th-century engraving after Vander Heyden depicting a town in Flanders, 18 x 15 cm
