SMALL ‘SAINT GEORGE, IN TEMPESTATE SECURITAS’ MEDAL IN YELLOW GOLD, 20th CENTURY
An 18-carat yellow gold medal, hallmarked with an eagle’s head, depicting Saint George slaying the dragon on one side and a ship with the inscription “In tempestate securitas” on the other.
Bears the initials “GD” and an inscription yet to be deciphered.
Diameter: approx. 2 cm.
Weight: 5.6 g
Good condition
Saint George, patron saint of knights, protects journeys on horseback, whilst Saint James, the great navigator and protector of ships, protects sea voyages.
Saint George was the protector of travellers and pilgrims, particularly those making the journey to Santiago de Compostela.
We would also add that this medal could be regarded as the pre-Revolutionary equivalent of the Saint Christopher medals sometimes found in taxis, which protect drivers and passengers.
Judging by its style, we believed it was made between the 16th century and the very early 20th century.
