POINTILLIST PAINTING “POSE À L’ATELIER” by Eugène BEGARAT (born 1943) Oil on canvas, signed lower left. Titled on the stretcher and signed on the reverse. Dimensions: 92 x 64.5 cm Good condition Eugène Begarat is a painter born in Nice in 1943. At the age of seventeen, he enrolled at the École des Arts Décoratifs in his hometown, before joining the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1964. Fascinated by colour and light, Eugène Begarat is part of the major classical movement within contemporary art. He draws inspiration from the technical innovations of the Post-Impressionists to develop a personal style that revitalises and modernises Pointillism and Chromatic Divisionism. Early in his career, he moved to Brittany to immerse himself in the light that had inspired Félix Vallotton and the Nabis. He then set out in search of stronger colour contrasts and travelled through southern Europe and the Mediterranean regions of Africa (Spain, Italy, Morocco, Tunisia). His style became more established and refined through his exposure to the vibrant light of the South. He returned to settle in France, first in Paris and then in Provence, near Vence, where he created an open-air studio and garden, in which he posed his models adorned in brilliant fabrics. In this way, he developed a body of work in which, little by little, the horizon gave way to frames of foliage and natural elements sculpted by light. He thus produced endless variations on the female form and her attire, in which the radiance of her complexion and the lustre of her hair are emphasised by the colourful satins and shimmering silks he loved to use. Over time, his brushwork moved away from relying solely on Divisionism to increasingly incorporate swathes of colour, whilst light remained the cornerstone of his art. Eugène Barat never concerned himself with the controversies and fashions that characterise contemporary art. Indifferent to the critical condemnation that so unsettled the figurative artists of the 20th century, he built a solid and coherent body of work centred on light and colour, sculpting, painting after painting, his vision of a sublimated femininity that is both eternal and subtly contemporary. His works feature in major international collections.
