PAINTING “FEMALE NUDE READING” by Philippe DE ROUGEMONT (1891–1965) Oil on canvas, signed lower right Bears an inscription on the back of the canvas and the stretcher: “ALEX JACOBSON 1886 29/5 1946, Vännerna Greta & Helge” (friends Greta and Helge) and a restorer’s label dated 2026. Dimensions: approx. 73 x 60 cm. Good condition, restored He was born in Lille, but grew up in Paris and Neuchâtel, Switzerland, the town where his family originally came from. After training as an engineer, he went to Paris to study art. There, he came into contact with artists such as Utrillo and Modigliani. He had numerous connections within the Swedish art scene, and it was there that he met his future wife, the artist Sigrid Wahlström. De Rougemont made a name for himself with his portraits, notably through commissions from Swedish figures such as King Gustav V and Prince Carl. His work often features female nudes, characterised by a rhythmic composition and an expressive touch. His paintings feature in public collections, including the Gothenburg Maritime Museum and the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs Trained in the European figurative tradition and working mainly in Sweden, Philippe de Rougemont developed a personal style at the crossroads of several artistic sensibilities. His treatment of the nude evokes the elegant restraint of Félix Vallotton, whilst the sensuality of the model is reminiscent of certain female portraits by Kees van Dongen. The use of colour and the pursuit of harmony can also be likened to the intimist works of Pierre Bonnard, Jean Gabriel Domergue and Joaquin Sorolla, as well as to certain portraits by Anders Zorn, a leading figure in Scandinavian painting and the Impressionist movement.
