BERTHOUD in Paris, 18-carat rose gold pocket watch, cock-shaped movement signed ‘Berthoud à Paris’, domed crystal set in a border of brilliant-cut diamonds, signed white enamelled dial, the back adorned with a high-quality miniature portrait of a lady, manual winding with key, gross weight: 34.3 g.
The famous Swiss watchmaker Ferdinand Berthoud (1727–1807) settled in Paris in the 18th century and was awarded the title of Master Watchmaker in 1753. Louis XVI appointed him watchmaker and mechanic to the King and the Navy.
He perfected marine chronometers for calculating longitude at sea.
He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1804.
