CHEST OF DRAWERS with a central raised panel, in rosewood veneer inlaid with curly grain, violetwood and green-stained wood, featuring a central medallion depicting a vase of flowers. Framed by Greek-style mouldings and alternating mouldings. It opens to reveal two drawers without crossbars. The bevelled side panels terminate in slightly curved, facetted legs. Beautiful gilded bronze ornamentation. Top in grey Sainte Anne marble. Marked ‘Jacques Bircklé’. Transitional piece between the Louis XV and Louis XVI periods. H: 85 – W: 126 – D: 51 cm (marble with damage, re-glued). Jacques Bircklé (1734–1803) Cabinetmaker, admitted as a Master in 1764. One of the suppliers to the Garde-meuble under Louis XVI. He practised his trade on Rue de Charenton and later on Rue Saint-Nicolas. He supplied Madame Elizabeth in Montreuil, the Duke of Orléans, the Princess of Lamballe and, between 1785 and 1789, Marie-Antoinette for the Château de Saint-Cloud. Judging by his output—which is extensive, varied, of fine quality and readily adapted to changing styles—Bircklé comes across as a conscientious cabinetmaker who sought not luxury or pretentiousness, but rather decorative effect. Bircklé excels in this regard, thanks to his talent as a marquetry artist. In the majority of his pieces, which are virtually devoid of bronze fittings, marquetry takes centre stage, featuring in vivid, contrasting colours, designed with simplicity and without superfluous detail. Made from light-stained wood, these designs usually stand out against a dark veneer background. Their effect is further enhanced by the chosen motifs, such as vases of flowers, urns, drapery, ribbons, musical trophies, various attributes and even landscapes depicting classical scenes, framed by Greek-style fillets."
