Attributed to Jan I van KESSEL (1626–1679) An interior view of a painter’s studio Oak panel, single plank, unparqueted Height: 39.5 cm Width: 57.5 cm Provenance: - Paris, Galerie Leegenhoek, in the 1970s; - auction in Paris, Hôtel Drouot, 26 November 1976, lot 3 (attributed to the 17th-century Flemish school) - Auction in Paris, Hôtel Georges V, Tajan auction house, Paris, 25 June 1996, lot 25 (expert: Eric Turquin, attributed to Jan van Kessel), hammered down at 320,000 francs. It is interesting to note that, of the works represented in this studio, all belong to the Flemish school except for Adam Elsheimer’s famous composition *Tobias and the Angel*, the original of which is now held at the Historisches Museum in Frankfurt. To its right, a scene of a town on fire is probably the work of Daniel van Heil. On the floor, one can recognise an interior of a larder by Frans Snyder; the bouquet of flowers on the easel can be attributed to Jan van Kessel.
